In accordance with this perspective, the aim of this paper is to present some thoughts resulting from the close literary analysis of two plays by William Shakespeare, Coriolanus (c. 1608) and Julius Caesar (1599), in connection with the idea of the body politic. Not only do we attest for the positive characterization of plebeian figures in contrast with the senatorial class, but we also present evidence of the historical change regarding the sociopolitical structure taking place in Shakespeare's time: from the obsolete, aristocratic, feudal worldview to a new perspective that requires the building of social consensus. Partiendo de la propuesta de Eduardo Rinesi (2021; 2011) sobre la tragedia como un instrumento conceptual útil y potente para pensar los problemas de la política, realizamos una lectura crítico-literaria atenta de ciertas escenas y personajes en dos obras del ciclo romano shakespeariano: Julio César y Coriolano (fechadas en 1599 y 1608, respectivamente). Estudiamos las pujas de poder entre pueblo, líderes y élites para dar cuenta de que existe una reivindicación de la plebe frente a la clase senatorial. Asimismo, a partir de la metáfora del body politic (es decir, las analogías entre cuerpo y orden sociopolítico) encontramos evidencia en las obras del paso de una visión anticuada de la jerarquía social propia de la organización medieval feudal, a otra que requiere la construcción de nuevos consensos en torno a la cosa pública.
