Sumario:The objective of this research is to develop an integrated index of meteorological drought risk in the Mataquito River basin, Maule Region, Chile. This is conceptualized under the definition of risk, for which it was necessary to study the threat and vulnerability. For this purpose, variables, indicators and indexes were selected in order to evaluate the meteorological drought phenomenon in an integral manner, in a simple way and from freely available data, so as to obtain a methodology that could be replicated. In this way, the standardized precipitation index (SPI) is used to diagnose the hazard of meteorological drought and the vulnerability indicators are focused on agricultural activity in rural areas, based on the factors of exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity. As a result, different risk susceptibility categories are obtained, where the extreme risk category is located in coastal districts and in the central depression. It is concluded that this exercise is useful for drought planning and monitoring in the Mataquito River basin, but it is also an exercise that can be reproduced in other agricultural basins.
