Comparative analysis of SRTM and DEM-Ar 2.0 Digital Elevation Models for the identification of areas of danger from flooding and waterlogging in an area of plain

Floods and waterlogging in urban centers are one of the main dangers in the Province of Chaco (Argentina). The objective of this work is to compare the Digital Elevation Models (DEM) SRTM distributed by the Geological Society of the United States and DEM-Ar 2.0 available through the National Geograp...

The objective of this work is to compare the Digital Elevation Models (DEM) SRTM distributed by the Geological Society of the United States and DEM-Ar 2.0 available through the National Geographic Institute of the Argentine Republic, both of 30 meters of spatial resolution, to the identification of potential flooding and waterlogging areas in the city of General San Martin (Chaco). To achieve this objective, a visual and statistical analysis was carried out at the municipal and urban levels, the quality of the MDE was evaluated by calculating the Mean Square Error (MSE) and finally, the information obtained was complemented with mapping of the local hydrography to identify dangerous areas. The results indicate that both DEMs are useful alternatives when using altimetry data from the studied region. Statistically they do not present significant differences, the recorded errors are between 2 and 5 meters, being better the vertical precision of the DEM-Ar-2.0.
