This book is a comparative study of the political emergence of Perón in Argentina and Vargas in Brazil. it seeks to describe and explain how and why peronism and Varguism were two different political projects. Using the tools of political discourse theory, this book scrutinises the implications Perón and Vargas had for the formation of the political identities of the socio-political actors in both countries. the book shows to what extent the differential character of the process of formation of political identities had to do both with the structural context in which Vargas and Perón developed their strategy as well as with the specific ways in which both leaders intervened in the political formation. In this sense, the research stresses the specific discursive and institutional modes of intervention that characterised these two leaders’ projects and their role in the political imaginary they inaugurated. It does so by tracing the responses to Perón and Vargas by different socio-political actors and the polemic context in which those responses took place.
Este libro presenta un innovador estudio comparativo sobre la emergencia política de Juan D. Perón en Argentina y de Getulio Vargas en Brasil. El autor sostiene, de manera contradictoria con la literatura comparada dominante, que ambos procesos fueron básicamente diferentes. Al aplicar las herramientas de la teoría del discurso político, llamada también de la “Escuela de Essex”, el libro escruta las implicancias que ambos liderazgos tuvieron para la formación de las identidades políticas. Muestra como la diferencia entre ambos procesos -el de Perón en Argentina y Vargas en Brasil- incidió en los modos específicos de intervención política en contextos esencialmente diferentes. El texto enfatiza los modos discursivos e institucionales de los proyectos de Perón y Vargas y sus respectivos roles en el imaginario político que produjeron. El autor encara el estudio sobre lo que fue el Peronismo y el Varguismo en sus respectivos años formativos, no de manera directa sino de manera oblicua; es decir, a partir del conjunto multiforme de respuestas y reacciones que estos dos líderes de mediados de siglo XX suscitaron en diferentes actores sociales, tratando de reconstruir la complejidad del contexto polémico en que estas respuestas tuvieron lugar. -- |
