To do this, it proposes a review of the debate on the masses and the open questions about the need for their integration into institutionalized political life. In that framework, it places the work of Gino Germani based on a reading that emphasizes the specificity of populism within the framework of liberal democracy itself. Thus, in the different sections of the text, it is argued that classical Latin American populism introduced a variation of certain key elements of modern political representation, deploying another form of political unity that tends to re-signify the liberal notion of the individual.
