Introduction: On Comparing - Reading guideline questions: What is to compare? What can be compared? Why is
comparison necessary? - Comparing languages may mean differentthings to different people. Some people
compare categories, for instance: the use ofthe adjective in the languages. Others
compare certain systems such as mood, tenses, etc. What is certain is that whenever
there is a need for comparison we resort to our knowledgeof grammar.
Even if we want to contrast conceptsor functions, for instance, how it is possible
to promise, threaten, swear, in different languages we pay attention to how sentences
are formed and also to the lexical items.
In the lexicon lots of differences may be found: (1) (Lexico/conceptual differences) - a. Salió corriendo
b. He ran out of the house
In Spanish direction is transmitted through the verb
In English direction manifests through the particle or prepositions |
