The article compares a Natural with an Urban Ecosystem adapted solely to the human

sustainable cities. This framework permits us to understand how Latin American cities
although they have transformed their spaces through social, cultural and technological
phenomena, have also caused substantial environmental damage.
The survey which included large cities and small villages throughout Latin America
showed that in the majority of places there are very high levels of pollution. This
problem dramatically affects health and levels of well being. Shared responsibility
between the State, private enterprise, university and citizens should define guidelines to
generate new values that permit an exercise of citizenship that entails transformations
that lead to new forms of social organization with greater awareness of the importance
of the environment.
The conclusion is a proposal for a combination of environmental projects and cultural
projects to improve the urban environment as well as social programs that encourage
connectivity and foster citizen transformation. The underlying integrating force is
