Schmidt, profesor e investigador del Departamento de Estudios del Cercano Oriente de la Universidad de Michigan, ha reunido en este volumen un número de importantes contribuciones sobre el alfabetismo, la práctica escritural y las tradiciones orales de Israel (y Judá) en la antigua Palestina y sobre la producción de los textos bíblicos (en plural, dado que nos estamos refiriendo a un período muy anterior al de la formación de un canon y de un texto fijo, no obstante las posteriores variaciones confesionales sobre qué constituye la Biblia Hebrea/el Antiguo Testamento). Schmidt introduce el volumen (pp. 1– 10), y siguiendo aquí un orden más bien temático que tal como aparecen en la obra, las siguientes cuatro contribuciones versan sobre el carácter de la evidencia epigráfica en el Levante meridional y su relevancia para una evaluación del alfabetismo en las sociedades de la Edad del Hierro (ca. 1200–600 a.C.), y la relación de estos factores con la producción de los textos bíblicos...
