The imposition of šahhan and luzzi obligations upon the diviner and the confiscation of his landed property by Alziyamuwa have been regarded in previous scholarship as arbitrary and abusive measures, whereas the king’s reaction would represent a just attempt to rectify them. Although this interpretation is certainly feasible, the present paper will discuss the evidence about the alleged abuses committed against Zū-Ba'la, the historical scenario in which they may have taken place, and the potential political considerations behind the royal verdict.
