Abstract: “What Our Ancestors Have Told Us” (Psalms 78, 3): The Old Testament
and the History of Israel
In the last decades, the debate about the value of the Old Testament for the modern
historiography has been intense. This paper argues that there are sufficient reasons to
consider the Old Testament as a source that -given the variety of materials and its
“confessional” framework- should be used carefully and critically. Those scholars that
only focus on the Old Testament as a uniform “whole” do not clarify the discussion.
After noting that the present structure of the Bible reflects a certain paradigm of the
believer’s experience, it is suggested a brief characterization of those works known as
“History of Israel,” concluding by calling attention on the way to understand History
and its relationship with the narrative. Both aspects notably influence the composition
of a modern “History of Israel” in Biblical times. |
