Many scholars have identified the manufacturers of these wares with several peoples that, according to the Hebrew Bible, lived in this region in the Iron Age. However, the relationship between pottery and ethnicity is a complex issue. This paper argues that, rather than being indicators of ethnicity, these ceramic traditions reflect the geographical, socio-economic and cultural differences between the pastoralist and semi-pastoralist tribes that moved through the Negev and Southern Jordan in the Late Iron II.
