description Abstract: Current research on the Nile Valley name Predynastic the previous times to the emergence of the state. Its use constitutes a projection of a historical sequence mainly based in the political history of Ancient Egypt. However, there are no sociopolitical parameters beyond the boundaries of the communities at that time. These communities have to be the point of departure for the analysis of the Nile Valley’s sociopolitical situation before the state. Funerary practices and iconographic testimonies show some indications of social differentiation, probably including the existence of communal elites and some kind of leadership. Besides, different social ambits –related to economical, ideological and warlike practices– also allow supposing the presence of leaders. This kind of evidence seems to fit well with the anthropological concept of chiefdom societies.
