It also shows the different discursive strategies and literate positionings (both of publicists, editors and contributors) adopted by some newspapers in Mexico City to question and explain to their readers the unprecedented situation that was being experienced. The newspapers' reading proposals on freedom of printing reveal key issues about the change of meaning of the concept of the American homeland and, specifically, of political sovereignty. It is observed that the American periodical press, and especially the New Spain press in Mexico City, acted as a source of reflection and modulation of a moment of political cleavage that was taking place in a context of fragmentation of the Spanish monarchy. Este artículo analiza algunos debates y posicionamientos críticos de ciertos periódicos de la segunda década del siglo XIX novohispano en relación con el decreto de libertad de imprenta de las Cortes de Cádiz, promulgado en noviembre de 1810. También muestra las distintas estrategias discursivas y posicionamientos letrados (tanto de publicistas, editores como de los colaboradores) que adoptaron algunos periódicos en la Ciudad de México para cuestionar y explicar a sus lectores la inédita situación que se estaba viviendo. Las propuestas de lectura de los periódicos sobre la libertad de imprenta revelan problemáticas clave sobre el cambio de significación del concepto de patria americana y, específicamente, de la soberanía política. Se observa que la prensa periódica americana, y en especial, la novohispana de la Ciudad de México, actúa como usina de reflexión y de modulación de un momento de clivaje político que se vivía en un contexto de fragmentación de la monarquía española.
