Conceived as independent cultural spaces and, therefore, communal meeting grounds, café concerts were a particular locus for humor during complex decades: they allowed the circulation of alternative voices and the expression of an emerging and biting political satire in a context of censorship and dictatorship. A history of the spatiality of this phenomenon allows us to think about the current state of independent artistic culture in Argentina, with government policies that limit rights of access to culture. This history also prompts critical questions: Might we derive other possible political and poetic coordinates for contemporary cultural practices from the space of café concerts? What other temporalities, spaces, and narratives are possible today? Where does community gather to make humor? Para pensar el estado actual de nuestra cultura artística independiente con políticas de gobierno que limitan nuestros derechos de acceso a la cultura, puede ser útil pasearse por una escenografía pública de ayeres. Mientras acontecía la Guerra de Vietnam, casi 2 años antes del Mayo francés, 11 años después del bombardeo a Plaza de Mayo, 28 días antes de la Noche de los Bastones Largos, 3 días antes del inicio de la “Revolución Argentina”, 3 años antes del Cordobazo, 150 años después de la Declaración de la Independencia, 10 años antes de la dictadura atroz del ´76; se estrenó, el 1 de julio de 1966, Help Valentino. Con las actuaciones de Edda Díaz, Nora Blay, Antonio Gasalla y Carlos Perciavalle, nacía el café concert, en una habitación de un conventillo hace 58 años. El café concert permitió la convivencia de clases y poderes, así como la circulación de voces alternativas en un contexto de censura y dictadura. Concebido menos como un género teatral que como un espacio comunal de encuentro, hoy surge la pregunta: ¿sería viable pensar a partir de ese espacio otras coordenadas políticas y poéticas posibles para nuestra prácticas culturales? Otras temporalidades posibles, otros espacios, otras narraciones posibles.
