This study examines the relationship between the language of publication and scientific impact, focusing on the number of citations received by articles authored by researchers from Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) on the internationalization of higher education. The research data stems from the analysis of the most cited works in three bibliographic databases of Scopus, WoS and Lens, discussing whether the current dynamics of scientific internationalization have effectively expanded international dialogues or, conversely, reinforced the hegemony of English and central countries. This dynamic promotes the adoption of a habitus among researchers, encouraging the use of a common language, English, for the dissemination of research outcomes, ultimately restricting and devaluing other languages and academic perspectives. Based on the collected data and analyzed, it is concluded that while publishing in English increases visibility and scientific impact, it also tends to perpetuate geopolitical inequalities in the scientific field, where knowledge produced in peripheric countries must conform to standards dictated by (and for) central countries so as to gain recognition. This reality places LAC researchers in a dilemma: to adopt English to achieve greater visibility or to prioritize local languages to guarantee social and local impact and also to preserve epistemological and cultural diversity. |

Este trabajo examina la relación entre el idioma de publicación y el impacto científico, con enfoque en el número de citaciones recibidas por artículos de autores de América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) sobre la internacionalización de la educación superior. La investigación se basa en el análisis de los trabajos más citados en tres bases de datos bibliográficas, Scopus, WoS and Lens, discutiendo si la dinámica actual de internacionalización de la ciencia ha ampliado efectivamente los diálogos internacionales o si, al contrario, ha reforzado la hegemonía del inglés y de los países centrales. Esa dinámica promueve la adopción de un habitus entre los investigadores, que incentiva el uso de un idioma común, el inglés, para la difusión de los resultados de investigación, lo que acaba restringiendo y devaluando otros idiomas y perspectivas académicas. Se concluye que, aunque la publicación en inglés aumenta la visibilidad y el impacto científico, también tiende a perpetuar las desigualdades geopolíticas en el campo científico, donde el conocimiento producido en los países periféricos debe adaptarse a los estándares ditados por (y para) países centrales, para ser reconocido. Esa realidad coloca a los investigadores de ALC ante un dilema: adoptar el inglés para alcanzar mayor visibilidad o priorizar los idiomas locales para garantizar impacto social y preservar la diversidad epistemológica y cultural. Este trabalho examina a relação entre idioma de publicação e impacto científico, com foco no número de citações recebidas por artigos de autores da América Latina e Caribe (ALC) sobre a internacionalização da educação superior. A dinâmica de publicação promove a adoção de um habitus entre os pesquisadores, que incentiva o uso de uma língua comum, o inglês, para fins de disseminação dos resultados das pesquisas, o que acaba restringindo e desvalorizando outras línguas e perspectivas acadêmicas.
