However, there is little scientific literature that describes how the displacement of rural women occurs. This article proposes an initial characterization of the mobility of rural women in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. Based on information from the review of secondary sources and a representative survey applied in rural areas, the article shows results that describe the territory from which women make their journeys, in addition to the destinations, reasons, costs, means of transport, time, and perception on their trips. The findings suggest that women’s mobility is characterized by majority trips to the urban area, distinguished using motorized means. Likewise, the results show that women have travel reasons more related to shopping, in addition to using public transport more for their mobility than men, with higher costs and times. Based on these discoveries, proposals for research topics are proposed to analyze the mobility of rural women at the local and regional level. En años recientes, se ha prestado mayor atención a los estudios sobre la movilidad cotidiana de las mujeres a nivel urbano. Sin embargo, existe escasa literatura científica que describa cómo ocurren los desplazamientos de las mujeres rurales. Este artículo propone una caracterización inicial de la movilidad de las mujeres rurales en la ciudad de Cuenca, Ecuador. A partir de información de la revisión de fuentes secundarias y de una encuesta representativa aplicada en zonas rurales, el artículo muestra resultados que describen el territorio desde el cual las mujeres realizan sus desplazamientos, además de los destinos, motivos, costos, medios de transporte, tiempos y la percepción en sus viajes. Los hallazgos sugieren que la movilidad de las mujeres está caracterizada por viajes mayoritarios hacia el área urbana, distinguidos por el uso de medios motorizados. Asimismo, los resultados muestran que las mujeres tienen motivos de viaje más relacionados con las compras, además de emplear más el transporte público para su movilidad que los hombres, con costos y tiempos más elevados. Sobre estos descubrimientos, se plantean propuestas de temas de investigación para analizar la movilidad de las mujeres rurales a nivel local y regional.
