The stepmother also plays a role in Ancient Egypt. The pejorative view of her is rooted in the threat she posed. Her arrival and the auspices of new offspring could be seen by the children of the first marriage as dangerous, and could involve a “struggle of interests” over the question of inheritance. There was a dichotomy in which the normative social discourse, according to which the natural condition of Egyptian adults was to be married (and have children), clashed with the private interests of certain members of the family unit in the case of remarriages. El prototipo de la madrastra es una construcción cultural universal. Su maldad se ha transmitido y ha llegado hasta nosotros generalmente a través de diversos cuentos que la describen como una mujer despiadada, manipuladora y caprichosa, capaz de hacer cualquier cosa en beneficio propio y a favor de su descendencia. La madrastra también juega un papel en el Egipto antiguo. La visión peyorativa de su figura hunde sus raíces en la amenaza que esta mujer suponía. Su llegada y el auspicio de una nueva descendencia podían ser vistos por los hijos del primer matri-monio como un peligro, traducido en una “lucha de intereses” por una cuestión de herencia. Se presentaba una dicotomía en la que el discurso social normativo, según el cual la condición sine qua non de los adultos egipcios era estar casados (y tener hijos), colisionaba, cuando se trataba de segundas nupcias, con los intereses particulares de algunos miembros de la unidad familiar.
