It is highlighted that the spatial analysis and the configuration of the territory are important reflection axes to understand the system of Hispanic domination, colonial power relations and the dynamics of resistance and inter-ethnic confrontation. Throughout the paper a description is given of the geographical conditions of the Colombian Andes, the indigenous and Spanish interpretations of the high plateau space, and how was the Muisca response to the spatial order that tried to implant the colonial system. The argumentation of the text is structured on the basis of archaeological and historiographical information about the Altiplano and the Muisca chiefdoms of the prehispanic and colonial periods. El artículo presenta algunas consideraciones sobre la producción social de un espacio colonial en la segunda mitad del siglo XVI en el Altiplano Cundiboyacense, región ubicada en el Nuevo Reino de Granada, en el centro de la actual República de Colombia. Se resalta que los análisis espaciales y de la configuración del territorio son ejes de reflexión importantes para entender el sistema de dominación hispánica, las relaciones de poder colonial y las dinámicas de resistencia y confrontación interétnica. A lo largo del escrito se hace una descripción de las condiciones geográficas de los Andes colombianos, las interpretaciones indígena y española del espacio del altiplano, y cómo fue la respuesta de los grupos muiscas al ordenamiento espacial que intentó implantar el sistema colonial. La argumentación del texto es estructurada a partir de información arqueológica e historiográfica sobre el altiplano y los cacicazgos muiscas de los períodos prehispánico y colonial.
