During the last decades of the 19th century, to civilize and fight against the “savages” were ideals shared by the governments; as a consequence the actions taken over ethnic groups were observed and copied in different contexts. The current paper analyzes diplomatic letters -between 1871 y 1883- written by Brazilian officials living in Buenos Aires; they were supposed to observe and inform their superiors about the options and policies taken by the Argentinean Government regarding the Indigenous issue. Apart from sending the above-mentioned information they added their own points of view over an issue both countries shared.  La construcción de Estados nacionales en América Latina, basados en una idea europea de “civilización”, llevó a que los gobiernos buscaran una solución al “problema” del mestizaje producido por la colonización europea, la inmigración africana y la presencia de grupos nativos. En las últimas décadas del siglo XIX, civilizar, imponer y combatir a los “salvajes” eran ideales compartidos transnacionalmente por los gobiernos, en consecuencia las acciones llevadas a cabo con respecto a diversos grupos étnicos eran observadas y copiadas en diferentes contextos. Este artículo se ocupa de analizar las cartas diplomáticas escritas por oficiales brasileños establecidos en Buenos Aires, entre 1871 y 1883, dedicados a observar e informar a sus superiores en Brasil las opciones elegidas por el gobierno argentino para lidiar con el tema indígena. Estos oficiales no sólo mandaron información sino que aportaron sus críticas y opiniones respecto a una cuestión que existía en ambos países. A construção de Estados nacionais na América Latina, baseada numa ideia europeia de “civilização”, levou os governos a procurar uma solução para o “problema” da mestiçagem produzida pela colonização europeia, pela imigração africana e pela presença de grupos nativos. Nas últimas décadas do século XIX, civilizar, impor e combater as “salvações” foram ideais compartilhados transnacionalmente pelos governos, em consequência das ações levadas a cabo com respeito a diversos grupos étnicos foram observados e copiados em diferentes contextos. Este artigo se ocupa de analisar as cartas diplomáticas escritas por oficiais brasileiros estabelecidos em Buenos Aires, entre 1871 e 1883, dedicado a observar e informar aos seus superiores no Brasil as opções eleitas pelo governo argentino para lidar com o tema indígena. Esses oficiais não apenas enviaram informações, mas transmitiram suas críticas e opiniões a respeito de uma pergunta que existe em ambos os países.
