In her new book, Cuerpos bajo guardia: las mujeres en las misiones jesuíticas del Chaco, Beatriz Vitar presents the results of the research she has conducted on the subject throughout her career and analyzes the sources, beyond what they explicitly say, in order to retrieve the indigenous female reality hidden behind ecclesiastical pens. The purpose of this text is to review the abovementioned book. La historiografía tradicionalmente ha desestimado el estudio sobre las prácticas y los roles de las mujeres indígenas en el Gran Chaco colonial replicando los argumentos de las fuentes jesuíticas sin realizar un cuestionamiento lo suficientemente crítico de ellos. En su nuevo libro, Cuerpos bajo vigilancia: las mujeres en las misiones jesuíticas del Chaco, Beatriz Vitar presenta los resultados de las investigaciones que ha realizado durante toda su trayectoria sobre la temática y analiza las fuentes más allá de lo que estas dicen de manera explícita, para así recuperar la realidad indígena femenina que se esconde detrás de las plumas eclesiásticas. El propósito del presente texto es reseñar su trabajo. Em seu novo livro, Corpos sob vigilância: mulheres nas missões jesuíticas do Chaco, Beatriz Vitar apresenta os resultados das pesquisas que realizou ao longo de sua carreira sobre o tema e analisa as fontes, além do que dizem explicitamente, a fim de recuperar a realidade feminina indígena que se esconde atrás das penas eclesiásticas.
