Weintroduce different types of visitas and their features, an overview of several historiographical approaches as well as different contexts in which the visitas were encouraged. We stress the link between visitas and revisitas and two major institutions of the colonial regime: tributo and mita. Not only the meaning and relevance the colonial state attributed to visitas and revisitas -especially for the tasas and retasas fixation- are analyzed, the particular role played by the revisitas, with regard to the indigenous elites in their attempt to reduce colonial taxation, is also considered. In summary, this study is concerned with the visitas as an invaluable source to study a central aspect of social tension during the early colonial domain. Este trabajo explora el significado de las visitas y revisitas realizadas en los Andes durante los primeros años de dominio colonial, centrándose en los Andes Meridionales y en las revisitas realizadas luego del gobierno del virrey Francisco de Toledo (1569-1581). Presentamos distintos tipos de visitas y sus particularidades, las grandes corrientes historiográficas y las diferentes coyunturas que las impulsaron. Se enfatiza el lazo existente entre las visitas y revisitas con dos instituciones coloniales centrales: el tributo y la mita. En tal sentido, exploramos el significado e importancia que les otorgara el estado colonial a visitas y revisitas -para la fijación de las tasas y retasas- y también el rol particular de las revisitas para las élites indígenas en su intento de morigerar las cargas coloniales. Nuestra propuesta es que las revisitas constituyen una fuente ineludible para analizar un segmento medular de la tensión social del primer siglo de dominio colonial. Este trabalho explora o significado das visitações e revisitações realizadas nos Andes durante os primeiros anos do domínio colonial, com foco nos Andes Meridionais e nas revisitações realizadas após o reinado do vice-rei Francisco de Toledo (1569-1581). Apresentamos diferentes tipos de visitações e suas particularidades, as principais correntes historiográficas e as diferentes circunstâncias que as impulsionaram. Enfatizamos a conexão entre visitações e revisitações e duas instituições coloniais centrais: o tributo e a mita. Nesse sentido, exploramos o significado e a importância que o Estado colonial atribuiu às visitações e revisitações -para o estabelecimento de impostos e devoluções- e também o papel específico das revisitações para as elites indígenas em sua tentativa de aliviar os fardos coloniais. Propomos que as revisitações constituem uma fonte essencial para a análise de um segmento central da tensão social durante o primeiro século do domínio colonial.
