The set of works presented here offers diverse contexts in which the dispute over the meanings of classifications between social groups is played out. That is to say, they refer to situations in which classifications - ethnic, racial or national - show their role and political significance. The struggle over the connotation of social classification categories or their scope of application, and their incidence and relationship with the policies of various states is thus discovered as a terrain that crosses the colonial and republican periods. El presente volumen de Memoria Americana está compuesto sustancialmente por contribuciones discutidas en el Grupo de Trabajo “Etnias y nación en América Latina: historia y comparación”, reunido en ocasión de realizarse la VII Reunión de Antropología del MERCOSUR, en Porto Alegre, Brasil, en julio de 2007. El conjunto de trabajos presentados acá ofrece diversos contextos en los que se juega la disputa por los sentidos de las clasificaciones entre grupos sociales. Es decir que se refieren a situaciones en las que las clasificaciones -étnicas, raciales o nacionales- muestran su papel y significación política. La lucha por la connotación de las categorías de clasificación social o por su ámbito de aplicación, y su incidencia y relación con las políticas de diversos estados se descubre así como un terreno que atraviesa los períodos colonial y republicano.  Sección Etnohistoria, Instituto de Ciencias Antropológicas.
