Based on a documentary body, of official reports, telegrams, correspondence, chronicles and travel diaries, we capture the moments of exchange and negotiation that took place after the signing of the “Treaty with the Teguelche Tribes” in which Orkeke played a central role as “Allied Chieftain”. The paper addresses the subsequent abrupt modification of these links in the so-called “Conquest of the Desert”, in which the capture of Orkeke was the primary objective of the military expeditions into the south. Oreke lived his last days as a “subdued cacique” in the city of Buenos Aires. The interethnic dynamics in both periods are analyzed with a focus on the different indigenous strategies facing the creole advance in the region. A través del estudio de la trayectoria del cacique Orkeke se realiza un primer acercamiento a las dinámicas interétnicas en Patagonia austral. Desde el empleo de un cuerpo documental, compuesto por informes oficiales, telegramas, correspondencia, crónicas y diarios de viaje, nos detenemos en los momentos de intercambio y negociación que tuvieron lugar tras la firma del “Tratado con las Tribus Teguelches” en el cual Orkeke jugará un rol central como “Cacique aliado”. Luego se aborda la abrupta modificación de dichos vínculos a partir de la denominada “Conquista del desierto”, donde las expediciones militares en tierras australes tendrán como principal evento la captura de Orkeke, quien vivió sus últimos días como “cacique sometido” en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Se analiza la dinámica interétnica en ambos períodos dando centralidad a las distintas estrategias indígenas ante la avanzada criolla en la región. Através do estudo da trajetória do chefe Orkeke, faz-se uma primeira aproximação às dinâmicas interétnicas no sul da Patagônia. Usando um conjunto de documentação, incluindo relatórios oficiais, telegramas, correspondências, crônicas e diários de viagem, examinamos os momentos de troca e negociação que ocorreram após a assinatura do "Tratado com as Tribos Teguelche", no qual Orkeke desempenhou um papel central como "Chefe Aliado". A seguir, aborda-se a mudança abrupta nesses laços, começando pela chamada "Conquista do Deserto", onde o principal evento das expedições militares às terras do sul foi a captura de Orkeke, que viveu seus últimos dias como um "chefe subjugado" na cidade de Buenos Aires. A dinâmica interétnica de ambos os períodos é analisada, enfatizando as diversas estratégias indígenas em resposta ao avanço crioulo na região.
