Corbett Umerez, Melanie Mestres, Fiorela Nueva Amazonia utopía feminista distopía voto femenino Nueva Mujer In this present paper we will address the contradictions posed by The New Amazonia (1989) by Elizabeth Burgoyne Corbett, a novel which surfaces in the midst of debates on the limits of women’s political development and falls into the genre of utopian fiction, but at the same time presents a dystopian depiction of the potential ideal feminist community which it portrays. In this respect, the book presents an ambivalent perspective on this future society since, although it argues that the enfranchisement of women and their participation in politics are the first steps to guarantee social progress and encourages contemporary women to fight for the acquirement of their rights, it also warns them about the dangers of a society that continues to be ruled by oppression and binaries. Therefore, we will propound that the true utopia which is sought is not found in this future country but in the possibility of creating a fellowship of active readers that participate in and ignite change with the purpose of promoting the social and political advance of women. En el presente trabajo abordaremos las contradicciones que plantea La Nueva Amazonia (1889) de Elizabeth Burgoyne Corbett, una novela que surge en medio de los debates sobre los límites del progreso político de la mujer y se inscribe dentro del género de la ficción utópica, pero que realiza una representación distópica de la potencial comunidad feminista ideal que en ella se describe. En este sentido, la obra presenta una mirada ambivalente sobre esta sociedad futura ya que, si bien postula que el acceso al voto femenino y la participación política de las mujeres son el puntapié para garantizar el progreso social eincita a sus contemporáneas a que luchen por la conquista de estos derechos, por otra parte advierte sobre los peligros a los que conduce una sociedad que se continúa rigiendo por la opresión y los binarismos. Por esta razón, propondremos que la verdadera utopía que se persigue no se ubica en este país futuro sino en la posibilidad de crear una comunidad activa de lectores varones y mujeres que sean partícipes e inciten cambios con el objetivo de promover el ascenso social y político de la mujer.
