This article reviews the statements on catalogs objectivesproduced from the 19th century to the beginning of the 21st in order to comparetheir characteristics and observe their evolution. Los catálogos han evolucionado a lo largo del tiempo no sólo en suaspecto físico, sino en la concepción de cuáles deben ser sus funciones. Diversosenunciados de los objetivos del catálogo han servido de base para la redacciónde principios o códigos de catalogación. Este artículo reseña los enunciadosproducidos desde el siglo XIX hasta comienzos del siglo XXI, para compararsus características y observar su evolución.
