We highlight the main definitions of folksonomy, their characteristics, the different types of existing folksonomies, and the differences with traditional indexing using controlled vocabularies, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of this new model. We conclude that folksonomies can offer great advantages in information retrieval, especially if they are used to complement the indexing using controlled vocabularies. El artículo repasa los hallazgos y opiniones de teóricos e investigadores que se han dedicado a analizar el fenómeno de las folksonomías. Se rescatan las principales definiciones del concepto de folksonomía, sus características, los tipos de folksonomías existentes, y las diferencias con los modelos tradicionales de indización mediante vocabularios controlados, analizando las ventajas y desventajas de este nuevo modelo. Se concluye que las folksonomías pueden ofrecer grandes ventajas en la recuperación de información, y más aún si son utilizadas como complemento de la indización mediante vocabularios controlados.
