The City Council, by granting subsistence allowances; private individuals, providing food, clothing and money; and St Augustine’s Hospital did what they could to help the poorest. Also, the population emigrated to Brazil and France to improve their living conditions. However, emigration was an economic inconvenience, as there was insufficient labour to work in the fields. The low wages motivated the emigration wave, but from 1925 onwards, unemployment became a reality, and the Municipality invested in the construction of public works to alleviate the labour crisis.

El municipio de Vila Nova de Ourém (Portugal), marcadamente rural, sufrió de forma severa el impacto de la posguerra. Los años inmediatamente posteriores al final de la Gran Guerra se caracterizaron por el brutal aumento de los precios de los productos de primera necesidad. A nivel social, esto tuvo consecuencias nefastas para la sociedad orureña. El municipio, concediendo ayudas de subsistencia; los particulares, mediante el aporte de alimentos, ropa y dinero; y el Hospital San Agustín, hicieron lo que pudieron para ayudar a los más pobres. Además, para mejorar sus condiciones de vida, la población optó por emigrar, en particular a Brasil y Francia, lo que supuso un inconveniente económico, ya que no había suficiente mano de obra para trabajar en los campos. La oleada inmigratoria estuvo motivada por los bajos salarios, pero a partir de 1925 el desempleo se convirtió en una realidad, por lo que el municipio invirtió en la construcción de obras públicas para atenuar la crisis de empleo. O concelho de Vila Nova de Ourém (Portugal), marcadamente rural, sofreu de forma severa o impacto do pós-Grande Guerra. Esse período imediato ao fim do conflito mundial, caracterizou-se pelo aumento brutal dos preços dos produtos de primeira necessidade. Ao nível social, teve consequências nefastas para a sociedade oureense. A Câmara Municipal, através da concessão de subsídios de subsistência; os privados, concedendo comida, roupa e dinheiro; e o Hospital de Santo Agostinho, fizeram o que puderam para auxiliar os mais pobres. Outrossim, a população para melhorar as suas condições de vida optou por emigrar, nomeadamente para o Brasil e França. Contudo, a emigração era um inconveniente económico, dado que não havia mão de obra suficiente para trabalhar no campo. O que motivou a onda emigratória foram os baixos salários, mas, a partir de 1925, o desemprego revelou-se uma realidade, tendo o Município apostado na construção de obras públicas para atenuar a crise de trabalho.
