Ella deja una marca que puede ser física pero que también es psicológica, donde el hombre se quiebra con facilidad y se escinden en él su yo anterior y su yo posterior al combate. De esta manera, la guerra está vinculada en la novela con la presencia de los dobles, siempre ligados a lo ominoso, a lo malvado y a lo siniestro. La narración disemina las réplicas y presenta numerosas ficciones, representaciones y artificios, a través de una estructura de relatos enmarcados, encabezados por personajes como el doctor Pierce y el ingeniero Bradley. Sus narraciones son inestables y permiten problematizar la frontera entre realidad y ficción.
