We will specifically concentrate on craft production and marketing, as it constitutes an increasingly important factor in the Mapuche economy. We will also account for the structural aspects concerning de development of this activity, among which we could mention tourism, underemployment, the search for alternative income, and different governmental and NGO´s policies. Owing to the fact that in the past years, there have been limitations in cattle rearing and lack of employment in these communities, we will be able to relate the increasing importance of craft production with the sources of income already mentioned. Este trabajo se propone analizar la relación entre producción doméstica y mercado en comunidades indígenas del pueblo mapuche localizadas en el departamento de Huiliches (provincia de Neuquén). Nos focalizaremos, específicamente, en la producción y comercialización de artesanías, dada la creciente importancia que posee como medio de supervivencia para las familias mapuches. Daremos cuenta de los aspectos estructurales que inciden en el desarrollo de esta actividad, tales como la promoción turística, el contexto de precarización laboral, la búsqueda de ingresos alternativos, las políticas estatales, el rol de las ONG’s, etc. Teniendo en cuenta que en estas comunidades se advierten en los últimos años limitaciones para la ganadería y falta de trabajo asalariado, se hace necesario interrelacionar la creciente preponderancia de la producción artesanal con las restantes fuentes de ingresos.
