For that, a social profile of those who appealed to the Real Audiencia –thereafter Corte de Apelaciones– to be declared pobres solemnes in order to litigate without charges, will be drawn. Through a prosopographical approach, different variables such as gender, “race”, marital status and occupation will be considered, and how they affected the lives of the petitioners, distinguishing the most usual causes of social decline. Specific life stories will be also analyzed to enlighten general patterns, and to find out the strategies that individuals coming from various social sectors displayed to alleviate their hardships and uphold their rights. Este trabajo analiza las formas de pobreza existentes en la ciudad de Buenos Aires durante el período 1785-1821. Para ello se trazará un perfil social de quienes apelaron a la Real Audiencia –luego Corte de Apelaciones– para ser declarados pobres solemnes y poder litigar sin gastos. Mediante un enfoque prosopográfico se examinará de qué modo distintas variables –tales como el género, la “raza”, el estado civil y la ocupación– incidían en la vida de los peticionantes, distinguiendo las causas más frecuentes de descenso social. También se analizarán historias de vida concretas para iluminar tendencias generales, y dar cuenta de las prácticas desplegadas por individuos provenientes de diversos sectores sociales en pos de atenuar sus carencias y defender sus derechos.
