This article analyzes the expansion of Asian trade throughout Spanish America in the first years of the 17th. Century. The main documentary source is the set of reports that Francisco de Valverde (governor of Panamá) sent to the Consejo de Indias. In the first part, a brief review on the evolution of the peninsular legislation applied on the Pacific Ocean Asian trade is presented. Afterwards, the characteristics of the Asian smuggling in the South American space are analyzed. Also, it is emphasized the way in which this Asian smuggling determined the Atlantic trade of Portobelo's fairs. In the last part of the article, is explored the ways by which the contratación de la China was made part of commercial flows in the American Atlantic Ocean, and became an imperial phenomenon. This precise matter turns out to be an unexplored issue, which so far did not deserve attention within the historical colonial studies El artículo busca ponderar la expansión del comercio asiático por Hispanoamérica en los primeros años del siglo XVII. El principal soporte documental son el conjunto de informes que el gobernador de Panamá, Francisco de Valverde, envió al Consejo de Indias. En un inicio se presenta una breve reseña de la evolución legislativa peninsular aplicada sobre el comercio asiático por el Pacífico. Seguidamente, se analizan aspectos y características que tuvo el contrabando asiático en el espacio sudamericano. Se intenta demostrar que el flujo comercial ilegal por el Pacífico llegó a condicionar el comercio atlántico de las ferias de Portobelo. En la última parte del artículo, se explora de qué manera la contratación de la China formó parte del entramado de flujos existente por el Atlántico americano, convirtiéndose en un fenómeno imperial. Este preciso asunto resulta ser una problemática “virgen”, que hasta el momento no mereció mayor atención dentro de los estudios históricos coloniales.
