This trial was the only one in the mid-1980s in which military commanders, mid-level commanders and subordinates in the police hierarchy were jointly convicted, and the first to make a civil legal pronouncement on the question of due obedience. The hypothesis is that Case 44 represented a scenario of continuity in terms of actors, concepts, rituals and practices in regarding of the Juicio a las Juntas, and that by deepening the investigations into the operational cadres, by producing a sentence and, from it, a legal pronouncement on transcendental questions on the issue of judging the repressive past in that context, the trial and, mainly in its outcome, became important factors in the conflicts that preceded the laws of Punto Final and Obediencia Debida.
