However, the writers differ in how they approach essay writing: Beckett humorously and playfully explores the hybridity of the essay by drawing upon drama and poetry resources; Eliot, makes an instrumental use of his essay as the are subservient to his poetic production and he therefore does not experiment with his own essay writing. Thus, while for the latter poetry is presented is his essays as content to be theoreticized upon, for the former poetry becomes an object of experimentation. Este trabajo se propone estudiar la ensayística de Samuel Beckett y de T. S. Eliot como espacio de reflexión sobre su composición poética. Ambos poetizan la crisis del lenguaje y de las formas literarias heredadas del siglo XX en un contexto signado por enfrentamientos bélicos armados y encuentran en el ensayo el género que les permite construir una base conceptual en torno a su quehacer artístico: cuál es la naturaleza, la función y el estatuto del lenguaje poético, cuál es la concepción de poesía que se despliega en sus poemas, entre otras teorizaciones. No obstante, los autores difieren en el tratamiento que hacen del ensayo como forma: el escritor irlandés explora, desde el humor y con una actitud lúdica, la hibridez del género al emplear para su composición procedimientos propios del teatro y de la poesía; el escritor norteamericano-inglés, por su parte, hace un uso instrumental del género, funcional a su quehacer poético, y no convierte a su producción ensayística en objeto de experimentación poética. En este sentido, mientras que para T. S. Eliot la poesía se manifiesta en sus ensayos principalmente como contenido sobre el cual teorizar, para Beckett el ensayo constituye una expresión discursiva que, tanto como el teatro, puede convertirse en objeto de poetización.
