description |
Isocrates Areopagiticus expresses a number of ideas that put in discussion the Athenian democracy. However his dissent is not presented as an absolute challenge to democracy but only to the way that it conducted on his time, and established the superiority of democracy over any other system his proposal is based on restoring those traditional values that made it better. The paradox is that the consequences of this "return" could not be anything else than the removal of freedom and capabilities that the demos had won and made the Athenian constitution a democracy. Our interest will be to discuss the tone of these arguments in relation to new perspectives that see a positive review to democracy. |
