Breves consideraciones sobre el uso de las fuentes en tres de los grandes heresiólogos de la Antigüedad, Epifanio, Agustín y Filastrio, nos dan idea de hasta qué punto el género que me propongo estudiar, la heresiología, es históricamente poco fiable, aunque en esto hay grados. Hay que decir en favor de los heresiólogos que su objetivo no es escribir historia, sino ofrecer al lector un instrumento para identificar la herejía y defenderse de los herejes.
