Instituto de las Culturas; Argentina Las mujeres artistas de la modernidad latinoamericana han estado sometidas a un proceso de silenciamiento y olvido, particularmente acentuado después de sus fallecimientos. En el contexto ecuatoriano, marcado profundamente por elementos artísticos tradicionales y por la recuperación del pasado indígena, la figura de Araceli Gilbert (1913-1993) se destaca con gran claridad. Pintora pionera y diseñadora de joyas de vanguardia, Gilbert estuvo al frente de una renovación plástica mayor en el contexto del Ecuador. Este artículo aspira a situar su figura en el panorama local, a analizar algunos de sus aportes al desarrollo de la práctica artística moderna en el Ecuador y a aportar al conocimiento general de su obra. Basado en un examen minucioso de las fuentes primarias disponibles en el archivo personal de la artista, este texto se propone como un ensayo de rectificación de la historia masculinista del arte, centrada en los logros de los varones. Informado por las teorías feministas en el campo del arte, este ensayo delineará una personalidad artística clave, aunque poco reconocida, particularmente fuera de su país natal, el Ecuador. The women artists of Latin American modernity have been subjected to a process of silence and oblivion, particularly after their passing. In the Ecuadorian context, deeply marked by traditional artistic elements and by the rediscovery of the indigenous past, the figure of Araceli Gilbert (1913-1993) stands out with great clarity. A pioneering painter and avant-garde jewelry designer, Gilbert was at the forefront of a vital plastic renovation in the context of Ecuador. This article aims to place her figure on the local scene, to analyze her contributions to the development of modern artistic practice in Ecuador, and to contribute to the general knowledge of her work. Based on a meticulous examination of the primary sources available in the artist’s personal archive, this text is proposed as an essay to rectify the masculinist history of art, centered on the achievements of men. Informed by feminist theories in the field of art, this essay will outline a key, if under-recognized, artistic personality, particularly outside her home country, Ecuador. Gluzman G. G. y Gluzman G.
