Pocas tesis caracterizan de manera tan específica la metafísica de Tomás de Aquino como aquellas que sostienen la real distinción entre el ser y la esencia, la tesis del ser como acto de la esencia, la tesis de la contingencia ontológica del universo y la concepción de la causa de la existencia de las cosas como ser subsistente. El objeto del presente trabajo es probar que estas tesis, así como otras que se derivan de estas, como, por ejemplo, la que sostiene la identidad entre la esencia y el ser de Dios, y la de la simplicidad divina, son el resultado de una absolutización previa de la esencia: esto es, de la interpretación esencialista y ontologizante del hecho de que los individuos existentes no son explícitamente mencionados en las definiciones. Few theses characterize more specifically the metaphysics of Aquinas than the thesis of the real distinction between being and essence, the thesis of being as the act of the essence, the thesis of the ontological contingency of the universe and the conception of the cause of the existence of things as subsistent being.
