Entre las controversias que ocuparon el mundo intelectual en el siglo XIII, el debate sobre el problema de la posible eternidad del mundo tuvo un lugar prominente. Las tres principales corrientes del aristotelismo académico coincidieron en que la temporalidad del mundo es una verdad de fe. Pero no había acuerdo sobre el problema de la posibilidad de un mundo eterno. Mientras que el aristotelismo ecléctico consideró que aceptarla era incurrir en herejía, el aristotelismo moderado no lo rechazó. Sin embargo, abogaron –aunque con algunas vacilaciones– por su indemostrabilidad. Finalmente, los aristotélicos rígidos afirmaban que la filosofía del Estagirita puede demostrar esta eternidad y que, por lo tanto, el rechazo de la posibilidad de un mundo eterno implica necesariamente que se dejen de lado algunos de los principios fundamentales del sistema de Aristóteles. Among the controversies that troubled the intellectual world in the 13th century, the debate about the problem of the possible eternity of the world occupies a prominent place. The three main currents of academic Aristotelianism agreed that the the temporality of the world is a truth of faith. But there was no agreement on the problem of the possibility of an eternal world. While eclectic Aristotelianism considered the acceptance of these “heretical”, moderate Aristotelianism did not reject it. However, they advocated –although with some vacillations– its indemonstrability.
