The main objective of this thesis was to determine whether the perceived quality of drinking water that university students had was related to the real quality of the water distributed by the provider in the metropolitan area of Arequipa (Peru). \nThe methodology used used as research tools a structured survey for the perceived quality \nvariable, and the physicochemical and microbiological analysis of water samples for the \nactual quality.\nOn the one hand, the survey was applied to a sample of 460 students and their questions were oriented to obtain information about the profile of the respondents, housing information, aspects of availability and use of the resource, perception of water quality, \nhygiene, diseases and responsibilities. The responses were then weighted and their score \ncategorized the perceived water quality level based on proposed score ranges.\nOnce the situation of each parameter was defined, it was weighted under three different scenarios (1: If it exceeds the LMP, 2: Close to the LMP but does not exceed it, 3: Below the LMP), taking into account the score obtained after weighting, this was categorized within a quality level based on proposed score ranges.\nFinally, it was determined that if there was a relationship between perceived and real \nquality, where both were categorized as "Good quality" a situation unrelated to the companys negative reputation in the past which indicated that users' perception was negative. The results obtained can be considered as contributions towards a \nrestructuring of the management of the provider company that works together with the \nacademic sector and the local managers of the resource, can transmit water quality safety to its users and raise their awareness on current water issues.

El objetivo principal de esta tesis fue \ndeterminar si la calidad percibida del agua potable que tenían los estudiantes universitarios guardaba relación con la calidad real del agua distribuida por la empresa prestadora en el área \nmetropolitana de Arequipa (Perú). La metodología empleada utilizó como herramientas de investigación una encuesta estructurada para la variable de calidad percibida, y el análisis fisicoquímico y microbiológico de muestras de agua para la calidad real.\nPor una parte, la encuesta se aplicó a una muestra de 460 estudiantes y sus preguntas se \norientaron a obtener información acerca del perfil de los encuestados, información de la \nvivienda, aspectos de la disponibilidad y uso del recurso, percepción de la calidad del agua, \nhigiene, enfermedades y responsabilidades. Posteriormente las respuestas fueron ponderadas y \nsu puntaje obtenido categorizó el nivel de calidad del agua percibido en base a rangos de \npuntuación propuestos.\nPor otra parte, las muestras de agua fueron analizadas en un laboratorio acreditado por el Instituto Nacional de la Calidad - INACAL (Perú) donde se analizaron los siguientes parámetros (color, turbidez, pH, cloro residual libre, nitratos y coliformes fecales \ntermotolerables), para posteriormente verificar si cumplían o no con los Límites Máximos Permisibles definidos por la normativa peruana (DS 031-2010-SA - Reglamento de la Calidad del Agua para Consumo Humano). Definida la situación de cada parámetro se procedió a ponderarla bajo tres escenarios diferentes (1: Si sobrepasa el LMP, 2: Cercano al LMP pero no \nlo sobrepasa, 3: Por debajo del LMP), teniendo en cuenta el puntaje obtenido tras la ponderación, este se categorizó dentro de un nivel de calidad en base a rangos de puntuación \npropuestos.\nFinalmente, se determinó que si existía una relación entre la calidad percibida y la real, donde ambas fueron categorizadas como de Buena calidad, situación que no guardaba relación con la reputación negativa obtenida por la empresa en el pasado que indicaba que la percepción de los usuarios era negativa.
