| Sumario: | Animal production systems are changing both at a global and local scale, as a result of several factors\nsuch as growing demand for food and the land needed for its production and technological innovations.\nThe main changes were generated when extensive systems became intensive, increasing their size and\nconcentrating geographically. The increase in the stocking rate impacts on greater use of resources (energy, nutrients and water) and the output of animal products per unit area. At these higher densities, greater quantities of feces are produced, which increase nutrients, pathogens, veterinary drugs residues and atmospheric gas emissions. Comprehension of the processes that take place, the monitoring through indexes, as well as, the favoring of technologies that propitiate circular economy in order to recycle its residues, is needed to achieve sustainability within these systems. The critical problems presented in this article cover from their characterization, their evaluation through indexes, definition of management strategies and flow interpretation within the production system, the proposal of mitigation and tools for its management within a circular economy context in livestock production systems. There is no doubt that there is still a lot of research to be done in this area. Its relevance is greater every day in order to solve challenges from sustainable recycling of organic resources in animal production systems, maximizing the benefits to the environment with fewer environmental (footprints/impacts) of our food production systems. |
