The preliminary study sought to determine the percentage of classical stereotypies in resident polo horses at stud farms located in the Maule and Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins regions of Chile. A survey was made to owners and/or managers of the horses. From the data obtained, the following variables were considered: sex, age, daily hours of stabling, visual contact with/without physical contact, hours of daily exercise and presence/absence of classical stereotypies (aerophagia, swinging and circular walk in the stall). The variables were evaluated using Chi-square test and Fisher' s exact test with a significance level of p<0.05 and multivariate logistic regression. The total prevalence of classical stereotypies was 5.83% (5.00% aerophagia and 0.83% circular walk in the stall), there were no horses with swinging or more than one stereotype. There was no statistical association between the risk factors considered and the presence of classical stereotypies. Principal component analysis showed a tendency to increase the risk of stereotypies when there was no physical contact, the animals were in the older age range and were females. There was a tendency to decrease the presence of stereotypies when the equines are males and are in the range of higher number of hours of daily exercise.
