From the point of view of cities, it is crucial to recognize immigration in order to understand a world situation that, although not new but part of history and human evolution, still has an effect on the experience of shared spaces today. Even knowing that nationality is not synonymous with culture, understanding the cultural origin of the inhabitants and their situation within urban environments can help to glimpse some inheritances, dynamics and overlaps; and even though there are still divergences regarding the definition of a migrant, the descriptions coincide in a basic aspect: they are people who have moved from their place of origin to another, and who carry with them an identity baggage.\nIn this context of continuous change, it is important to underline the role of cities, since the metropolises that have become attractive gateways have become physically and socially places for diversity where tolerance and social cohesion are frequently absent. Immigration, on the other hand, has not only been a social phenomenon -in the different destination cities, immigration has progressively given rise to situations of encounter, multiplicity of languages, customs and traditions- but also an economic one allowing global and transnational exchanges, movements of people, goods and money.\nFrom the local point of view, migrations have been part of the founding myth of the Argentine Nation-State, inscribed in the metaphor of the melting pot of races the country's supposed characteristic of having the capacity to receive the races of the world and to melt them into a single and homogeneous society. This way of understanding national identity hides in a certain way the heterogeneities and particularities of the groups that have made up the country's population. The city of Buenos Aires, under the effects of globalization, has become an attractive point for business, and tourism has become an important economic resource.\nWe present in this Thesis two examples in which different cultural groups have tried to adapt to the urban system found upon arrival -Chinatown of Belgrano and the Andean Market of Liniers-, and we will try to review how the City has provided them tools to do so.

Desde el punto de vista de las ciudades resulta crucial reconocer a la inmigración para así poder comprender una situación mundial que, si bien no es nueva sino parte de la historia y la evolución humana, tiene aún hoy un efecto sobre la vivencia de los espacios compartidos. Aún sabiendo que nacionalidad no es sinónimo de cultura, el comprender el origen cultural de los habitantes y su situación dentro de los entornos urbanos puede ayudar a vislumbrar algunas herencias, dinámicas y solapamientos; y aunque aun hoy existan divergencias ante la definición de migrante, las descripciones coinciden en un aspecto base: son personas que se han trasladado de su lugar de origen a otro, y que cargan consigo un bagaje identitario.\nEn este contexto de continuo cambio es importante subrayar el rol de las ciudades, siendo que las metrópolis que se han convertido en atractivos gateways se han transformado social y físicamente en lugares para la diversidad donde la tolerancia y la cohesión social con frecuencia no están presentes. La inmigración, por otro lado, no ha sido únicamente un fenómeno social -en las distintas ciudades-destino la inmigración ha progresivamente dado lugar a situaciones de encuentro, multiplicidad de idiomas, costumbres y tradiciones- sino también uno económico permitiendo intercambios globales y transnacionales, movimientos de personas, bienes y dinero.\nDesde el punto de vista local, las migraciones han sido parte del mito fundacional de la Nación-Estado Argentina, inscriptas en la metáfora del crisol de razas -supuesta característica del país de tener la capacidad de recibir a las razas del mundo y de fundirlas en una única y homogénea sociedad. Este modo de entender la identidad nacional oculta en cierta forma las heterogeneidades y particularidades de los grupos que han conformado la población del país.
