This work, addressed to primary schools of the Eastern State, was published for the first time in Montevideo in 1846. Echeverría considers that a reform aimed at improving primary education requires to be focused on two kinds of remedies: on one hand, the teaching methods and, on the other hand, the moral education. The first one consists of finding the method which results in the fastest education of the child. The second one constitutes the central subject of the work and therefore is extensively developed. Moral education must prepare citizens in order to raise awareness of their own duties towards themselves, the fellow, the family, the mother country and the humanity, thus leading them to moral perfection. This work seeks the inspiring principles of our social creed in the tradition of the May Revolution. These principles are primarily directed towards a double purpose: emancipation and organization. According to Echeverría, this objective can only be obtained in Democracy which is a symbol of the May Revolution and of our social creed. Esta obra, redactada para las escuelas primarias del Estado Oriental, fue publicada por primera vez en Montevideo en 1846. Considera Echeverría que la reforma del estado en que se encuentra la enseñanza primaria de su época requiere dos trabajos: uno sobre métodos y otro sobre la enseñanza moral. El primero consiste en encontrar aquel método que con mayor rapidez dé por resultado la instrucción del niño. El segundo constituye el tema central de la obra y es objeto de amplio desarrollo. La enseñanza moral debe preparar ciudadanos conscientes de sus deberes para consigo mismos, para con el prójimo, con la familia, con la patria y con la humanidad, conduciéndolos así a la perfección moral. Busca en la tradición de Mayo los principios inspiradores de nuestro credo social. Señala con ella una doble finalidad: emancipación y organización.
