Legal scholars rarely analyze the assumptions, objectives, and means of the type of research we put into operation; we are so immersed in its practice that we lose sight of its perspectival character and its limits. Now, the ideal types discussed in this chapter, it is important to note, are not exclusive of environmental law. Rather, they are forms of scholarship that cut across legal academy. El texto se divide en cuatro partes para cumplir con este objetivo. En la primera examino críticamente el modelo de la sistematización; en la segunda, el de la reforma; en la tercera, el de la explicación, y en la cuarta, el de la comprensión. Este artículo, por tanto, quiere contribuir a entender qué significa investigar en el derecho ambiental. Los académicos del derecho pocas veces analizamos los supuestos, los objetivos y los medios del tipo de investigación que ponemos en operación; estamos tan inmersos en su práctica que perdemos de vista su carácter perspectivo y sus límites. Ahora bien, los tipos ideales que se examinan en este capítulo, es importante notarlo, no son exclusivos del derecho ambiental. Más bien, son formas de investigación que atraviesan la academia jurídica. Los modelos de investigación del derecho ambiental no son idiosincrásicos.
