In this work, no C. difficile isolates were obtained. C.perfringens was isolated from healthy and sick animals. During an outbreak of hemorrhagic enteritis C. perfringens type E (binary toxin producer) was isolated. This is the first report of type E illness in Argentina. Analyzed type E isolates belong to the same clonal complex, regardless of their geographic origin. This organism is highly adapted and pathogenicity is due to the combination of plasmid borne and chromosome encoded factors. In vivo it was possible to reproduce the lethal effect and determining an enterotoxigenic effect of iota toxin. Inhibition of gastrointestinal motility and changes in fluid homeostasis were observed, also it was possible reproduction of intestinal lesions. In vitro it was observed that iota toxin induces the formation of extensions on cell surface to which C. perfringens type E cells can attach differentially. Intraspecific inhibition is involved in intestinal colonization by C.perfringens type E.Type E bacteria produces an antimicrobial peptide with activity against different strains of C. perfringens.
