He thus follows certain ideas of George Bernard Shaw’'s The Perfect Wagnerite. Chéreau'’s Tetralogie is not merely a new chapter in the history of The Ring’'s performances, but represents a revolution in the conception of staging, which is valid up to the present. Patrice Chéreau situó El Anillo del Nibelungo de Richard Wagner en la época en que fue escrita, poniendo de manifiesto la oposición entre los poderosos y el sufrimiento de los trabajadores, en consonancia con las ideas desarrolladas en El perfecto wagneriano de Shaw. La puesta de la primera obra fue muy controvertida y generó un amplio rechazo del público. Pero, finalmente en 1980 -último año de su presentación- El Anillo concluyó con 90 minutos de ovación y 110 cortinas, éxito que hasta hoy no ha sido superado.
