Sumario:The essay deals with the dramaturgy of the actor in two forms: the collective creation and the theater of states or theater of the intensity. My purpose is to differentiate both forms, not from a mere description of their traits, but from a structural perspective based on a Lacanian approach. A theory of the theatrical praxis must go beyond the imaginary; it must account for the difference between both modalities of theater in their construction of scenes and plots, in their way of working with the real and the symbolic, and the positioning of the audience. Although improvisation plays an important role in the collective creation and the theater of intensity, such improvisation is based on different artistic and political assumptions which can be thought from Lacan’s algebra and two specific moments in his teaching.
