Sumario:This article is a contextual approach to the influence of positivism in the field of theatre research. It begins with the characterization of this paradigm in social sciences, proceeding then to a problematization of its effects on theatre research, such as the dichotomies created between the fields of dramatic knowledge, the advocacy for universality and validation of knowledge, the distance imposed between the researcher and its object of study and the geopolitics of knowledge and control. The presentation of these problematizations seeks to contribute to the acknowledgment of this paradigm's widespread influence on theatre research, which has affected the expantion and growth of the field, as well as its very nature and its relation with  other  fields of knowledge.
