description In less than five years, Puerto Rico has lived through a set of social experiences that exacerbated the paradoxes and contradictions of the country’s development model, anchored in our colonial subordination to the United States. What has been the evolution of musical research in times of disaster capitalism and accentuated austerity policies? To address this question, the article proposes a historical look at the writings and research on music, considering their contexts of enunciation. In what ways have popular musical practices been listened to by the State and the literate intelligentsia, and what role have narratives on music played in the country's sociocultural and political debates? What impact have these ways of listening had in the development of cultural and educational policies? What has been the role of the musicians themselves in the production of knowledge about musical practices and traditions, as well as in the configuration of evaluative schemes around them? How is the current situation transforming listening modes and what new approaches to the production of musical knowledge are emerging on the horizon?

En menos de un lustro, Puerto Rico ha vivido un conjunto de experiencias sociales que han exacerbado las paradojas y contradicciones de lo que ha sido el modelo de desarrollo del país, anclado en nuestra centenaria subordinación colonial a los Estados Unidos. ¿Cuál ha sido el devenir de la investigación musical en tiempos de capitalismo del desastre y de acentuadas políticas de austeridad? Para acercarnos a responder dicha pregunta, este artículo propone una mirada histórica a los escritos e investigaciones sobre música en vínculo con sus contextos de enunciación. ¿De qué modos han sido escuchadas las prácticas musicales populares por parte del Estado y de la intelectualidad letrada y qué rol han jugado las narrativas sobre la música en los debates socioculturales y políticos del país? ¿Qué incidencias han tenido estos modos de escucha en el desarrollo de las políticas culturales y educativas? ¿Cuál ha sido el papel de los propios músicos en la producción de conocimientos sobre las prácticas y tradiciones musicales, así como en la configuración de esquemas valorativos en torno a éstas? ¿Cómo la coyuntura actual está transformando los modos de escucha y qué nuevos acercamientos a la producción de saberes musicales se perfilan en el horizonte? Em menos de cinco anos, Porto Rico viveu um conjunto de experiências sociais que exacerbaram os paradoxos e contradições do modelo de desenvolvimento do país, ancorado em nossa secular subordinação colonial aos Estados Unidos. Qual tem sido a evolução da pesquisa musical em tempos de capitalismo de desastre e políticas de austeridade? Para encarar essa questão, este artigo propõe um olhar histórico sobre os escritos e as pesquisas sobre música em seus contextos de enunciação. De que forma as práticas musicais populares têm sido ouvidas pelo Estado e pela intelectualidade letrada e qual o papel das narrativas sobre a música nos debates socioculturais e políticos do país? Qual o impacto dessas formas de escuta no desenvolvimento das políticas culturais e educacionais?
