Gilson in his book L'être et l'essence– that he points out in Thomas of Sutton one of the rare disciples of Aquinas (perhaps the first) grows. The Englishman would have been able to see what we present here as “the authentic face of Thomistic metaphysics”: his interpretation of Thomas Aquinas’ thought was such that, instead of privileging the essence in the analysis of the structure of the real –as most of the exponents of the Thomistic doctrine did, in an attitude that, we believe, is due to the influence of Egidio Romano's ‘Theoremata de esse et essentia’–, he prioritized the esse, in such a way that one could speak of an existential metaphysics in Thomas Aquinas. Thus, we briefly expose some aspects and consequences of each of these interpretations of the thought of the Angelic Doctor, and we analyze the texts of Thomas of Sutton that could be interpreted in this way. In closing, in spite of some nuances that differ in the presentation, we reach a final agreement with Gilson's thesis. A medida que se multiplican los estudios en torno al pensamiento y los escritos de este dominico inglés que vivió hacia finales del siglo XIII, crece la convicción –ya sostenida por E. Gilson en su libro L'être et l'essence– que señala en Tomás de Sutton a uno de los raros discípulos del maestro de Aquino (tal vez el primero). El inglés habría sido capaz de ver lo que aquí presentamos como “la auténtica cara de la metafísica tomista”: su interpretación del pensamiento de Tomás de Aquino fue tal que, en vez de privilegiar la esencia en el análisis de la estructura de lo real –como lo hicieron la mayoría de los exponentes de la doctrina tomista, en una actitud que, consideramos, se debe a la influencia del ‘Theoremata de esse et essentia’ de Egidio Romano–, priorizó al esse, de manera tal que se podría hablar de una metafísica existencial en Tomás de Aquino. Así, exponemos brevemente algunos aspectos y consecuencias de cada una de estas interpretaciones del pensamiento del Doctor Angélico, y analizamos los textos de Tomás de Sutton que podrían ser interpretados de este modo.
